Should You Take Your Puppy To Training Classes?

Posted on

When you get your first puppy, you are absolutely enamored, and in your mind they can do no wrong. Like a proud parent, you find joy in everything they do, from their first attempt at climbing the stairs, to their first bark and everything in between. However, as time goes on you begin to recognize some of your puppy's canine habits to be somewhat less than endearing and you begin to wonder what you should do about it. The question then arises as to whether you should take your puppy to training classes. Dog training services have much to offer your new puppy. So, get to know a little more about dog training classes to see if they are right for you and your puppy.

What Behaviors Do You Want From Your Puppy?

When you see your friends, family, and neighbors with their pets, you may notice certain behavioral similarities. The dogs know to wait for their owner before trying to take off down the street. They do not act aggressively towards people or other dogs, and understand the same basic commands such as sit, stay, and heel.

You may assume that dogs are automatically inclined to understand such social niceties and obedience from watching the well-behaved dogs around you. However, if you do not take your dog to obedience classes, they may never learn these proper behaviors. Puppies are much like children; they learn by doing, interacting, and by seeing proper behaviors exhibited and rewarded.

As such, taking your puppy to training classes will help them to get used to being around other people and dogs, and they will learn the proper commands and behaviors you expect from them in an environment where they will see other dogs modeling the same behavior. It's the human equivalent of taking your child to a play group with other children their own age to help them socialize and learn to play well with others.

Do You Want Your Puppy To Stay Safe?

Safety is a big issue when you become a pet owner. Not only do you want to keep your new furry bundle of joy safe from dangers such as cars, abusive people, or getting lost, you also want to make sure that other people and animals are safe around your puppy.

In spite of what many people think, canine aggression towards people and animals is a learned and taught habit, and even if your puppy initially shows such tendencies, does not mean they will stay that way. Proper training starting at an early age will teach your puppy to be docile and downright friendly towards people and animals alike.

When it comes to dangers such as cars and getting lost, teaching your puppy commands such as stay, heel, and come will help prevent such problems. If you accidentally drop your dog's leash, for example, a well-trained dog will stop when you tell them to heel, or return to you when you say "come." While you can try to teach such skills on your own, a training class will be a controlled environment complete with distractions (other people and dogs) in which you can test your puppy's listening skills.

As you can see, when it comes to taking proper care of your puppy and encouraging wanted behaviors, taking them to a puppy training class is your best bet. You will have a safe and well-behaved puppy in no time with basic obedience classes. For more information, contact a company like The Pet Spot Pet Resort.
